Replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs
With the prices for highly efficient LED bulbs continuing to fall, there’s a quick payback for installing them in place of old incandescent bulbs, especially in high-use fixtures and lamps. As an added bonus, these bulbs can stand repeated switching and last as long as 25 years.
Add task lighting where you need it
It takes more wattage to light an entire room with overhead fixtures than to light specific areas for reading or performing other tasks. Turn off ceiling lights and use table lamps, track lighting and under-counter lights in work and hobby areas as well as in kitchens.
Use timers and sensors
Using plug-in timers on strategically placed lights will help your home look occupied when you are at work or on vacation. Remember to reset timers to coincide with seasonal darkness. Attach photo sensors or motion detectors to outside lights rather than leaving them on overnight.
