There is more to the words “healthy competition” than you might have expected. It’s satisfying to set goals and track your progress, but many people are influenced by the behaviour of others. In fact, 66% of customers who responded to our poll answered “yes” to the question of whether comparing their data to others acts as a motivation tool.
BC Hydro’s online electricity-tracking tools, for instance, provide data that lets you see how you measure up to similar homes nearby. Such tangible results can compel people to improve their behaviour to avoid lagging behind or compete harder to maintain the top spot.
Those who answered “no” (18%) or “never thought about it” (16%) might not have delved into their own data or perhaps they are already self-motivated in achieving their goals.
